Michigan Conservatives Rally Behind “MAGA Solar” Bill to Secure Energy Independence, Lower Costs, and Cut Out China
22 GOP Lawmakers Back Legislation to Expand Community Solar in Michigan
Lansing, MI — A coalition of conservative lawmakers and advocates today announced strong support for new legislation to expand community solar in Michigan through the Maximizing American Grid Affordability (MAGA) Solar Act—a policy designed to strengthen grid reliability, slash energy bills, and secure American energy supply chains from foreign adversaries like China.
Introduced by Rep. Greg Markkanen and backed by 22 Republican co-sponsors, the bill creates a locally distributed shared solar (LDSS) program while prohibiting the use of solar components from China, Iran, and North Korea. It prioritizes rooftop and agrivoltaic development, reduces impacts on farmlands and forests, and ensures low-income households benefit from cost-saving solar subscriptions.
“The MAGA Solar Act will cut out foreign enemies entirely while powering over 200 American manufacturing facilities announced just this past year,” said Larry Ward, CEO of American Power Play. “It’s the kind of energy security and economic development policy we need now.”
This bill advances energy independence, saves money for families and businesses, and boosts local economies and revenues without raising taxes,” said Ed Rivet, Executive Director of the Michigan Conservative Energy Forum. “It’s a smart, conservative approach to meeting 21st-century energy needs.”
The legislation includes minimum 10% bill savings for subscribers, 25-year credit guarantees, and strong provisions to ensure participation across income levels. It also respects local zoning authority and prohibits development on clear-cut public lands.
American Power Play—a national organization advancing pro-growth energy solutions—praised Michigan’s leadership and noted that the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), a trusted conservative policy network, recently passed a model resolution supporting community solar legislation in all 50 states.
“HB 4590 is exactly the type of energy legislation Republicans around the country should be championing,” said Lori Saine, spokesperson for American Power Play and former Republican Colorado state representative. “Shared solar is key to cementing American energy security and empowering constituents and businesses alike.”
A study by Michigan State University and the Coalition for Community Solar Access found community solar legislation could contribute $1.4 billion to Michigan’s economy and support 18,500 jobs over 30 years.
With 19 states and the District of Columbia already benefiting from community solar programs, Michigan has the opportunity to reclaim leadership in distributed locally produced solar energy. Michigan would be the latest of a string of states to embrace community solar programs, including Alaska late last year. Nationwide, Republicans and Democrats alike are recognizing the economic power of community solar, with a new analysis showing that community solar could unlock more than $120 billion in economic activity nationwide.
